MAN FACES HOLDUP CHARGES

A man wanted in connection with the shooting of a St. Petersburg, Fla., store owner last month has been charged with the robbery of a Carroll County grocery store.

Vernon Lee Daniels Jr., 22, of Galax was arrested in connection with the March 11 robbery of G.C. Felts Grocery store in the Pipers Gap section of Carroll County.

Doris Felts, wife of the store owner, said two men entered the store between 1 and 2 p.m., hit her husband, G.C. Felts, in the head, and pulled him into a back room.

Felts suffered cuts and bruises on his face.

One of the men held him at knifepoint while the other ransacked the register. They fled in a car.

Daniels was being held Friday in the Carroll City Jail in lieu of a $250,000 bond.

He also was charged with failing to appear in Carroll County Circuit Court on a breaking-and-entering charge.

Twin County Crimestoppers received a telephone tip that led to Daniels' arrest.

Carroll authorities said Daniels is wanted in Florida, but could provide no details of the shooting there.
