FLEMING'S WHEATLEY DOMINATES

William Fleming's Mike Wheatley was selected the outstanding performer at the Dan Crowe Relays on Saturday at Dobyns-Bennett High School.

Wheatley won the 100-meter dash in a time 10.7 seconds. He also was a member of the first-place 400- and 800-meter relay teams. The times of 42.8 seconds and 1 minute, 28.8 seconds, respectively, in those events each set a meet record.

Wheatley was joined on the 400 relay team by Carlos Hurt, Paul Paige and Don Smith. Other members of the 800 team were Chris Robinson, Smith and Hurt.

Paige and Smith combined with Mike Reed and Edward Harper to win the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:27.1. Harper and Reed joined Joe Baytops and Brian Bowles to run a school-record first-place time of 8:14.2.

Baytops also won the high jump, Robinson won the long jump and Keith Baker won the triple jump.

The William Fleming girls also performed well in the meet. Andrea Brown placed first in the shot put with a throw of 32-7. Monica Cabbler won the triple jump at 34-11 1/2.

The relay team of Jennifer Wilson, Andrea Saunders, Toni Jennings and Tracy Claytor won the 400 relay, and Kovanda Brown teamed with Wilson, Saunders and Claytor to win the 800 relay as well.

Tonya Kabia, Keshia Anderson, Kovanda Brown and Kaja Cooper won the 1600 relay.

Patrick Henry's Mike Glowczynski won the boys' 1500-meter steeplechase and Felicia Godley finished in the top five in four girls' events.

Glowczynski won the steeplechase in 4 minutes, 41.9 seconds. Godley placed third in the long jump with a jump of 15 feet, 11 inches; was second in the triple jump at 34 feet, 5 inches; and was on the fourth-place 100-meter relay team and fifth-place 200-meter relay team.

Athletes from 27 schools participated in the event. No team scores were kept.
