VICTIM IN FIERY I-81 CRASH IDENTIFIED

Virginia State Police have identified the man who died in a fiery accident after leading police on a 30-mile chase along Interstate 81.

He was Eugene Frank Oltz, 62, of Lansing, N.Y., police said.

Sgt. Don Orfield said a man driving a Winnebago was pursued along the interstate on Friday by a trooper who noticed the recreational vehicle was towing an unsecured load. The vehicle sped away when the trooper approached.

The chase started near Wytheville and ended near Chilhowie when the man lost control of the Winnebago.

The vehicle in tow eventually came loose from the Winnebago. Orfield said the two vehicles are registered to the same person.

Orfield said troopers have yet to determine why the man fled the initial scene. A preliminary background check of the man identified Saturday as the victim indicated no reason for him to flee, Orfield said.
