Radford also beat out Christiansburg to win in the science category.
But Radford lost to Blacksburg High in the math category.
Even though Blacksburg became the math champs, it lost out in two other categories when Carroll County High took the English title and Rocky Gap High scored in social studies. Blacksburg was runnerup in both those categories.
The competition is based on verbal tests which are given to student teams from each of the high schools throughtout western Virginia.
Sixteen teams competed in each subject. Tournament director was Keith Rowland, assistant principal of Christiansburg High.
The conference is managed by a board made up of principals from the participating high schools. Edlow Barker, principal of Radford High School, is chairman of the board.
Marty Aylesworth of Radford University, is commissioner of the conference.
During the regular season in the East Division of the conference, Blacksburg High finished first in English, math and social studies and Radford High finished first in science and the all-around categories.
In the West Division, Pulaski was first in math and tied with Rural Retreat High for top standing in the All-Around category.
Other winners in that division were Rural Retreat High, George Wythe High and Carroll County High which ended in a three-way tie in English; Bland County High in science; and Rocky Gap High and Carroll County High in a tie in social studies.
