BUCS HANDED FIRST DEFEAT 8-4

After having their way with the first opponent of the season, the Salem Buccaneers came up against a team as hot as they were.

The Frederick Keys scored five runs in the last two innings to beat the Bucs 8-4 on Monday night at Municipal Field in a Carolina League game, sending the Bucs (4-1) to their first loss of the year.

Frederick designated hitter Tim Holland and third baseman Ken Shamburg each had four hits and three RBI as the Keys improved to 4-1.

"We can't win them all," said Bucs manager Stan Cliburn. "But I'm pleased with the way we kept fighting. This club is going to battle until the end."

Trailing 1-0 in the fourth, Frederick took advantage of some Bucs' mistakes to take a 3-1 lead.

A single, a misjudged fly ball that went for a double and a hit batter loaded the bases with one out. Then Mike Lehman hit a sacrifice fly to right scoring Holland. Salem right fielder Chris Estep overthrew third, allowing Shamburg to score.

Ricky Gutierrez singled to move Hedge to third, and the duo executed a perfect double steal for the third run.

The Bucs tied the game at 3 in the sixth on a two-run homer by Domingo Merejo, who had three hits and three RBI in his first game of the season.

Salem had a great chance to score more runs in the seventh when it loaded the bases with one out. But Greg Sims' smash to second was scooped up by Brad Hildreth and turned into a 4-6-3 inning-ending double play.

"[Sims] hit something hard and got it in play. Give them credit because they made a great play," Cliburn said. "That got the momentum going back in their direction."

Mike Richardson led off the inning with a single and scored on a triple by Holland. Shamburg singled and the score was 5-3. The Keys put the game out of reach with three runs in the ninth.

\ BUCSHOTS: Sims, who was 0-for-4, didn't get a hit for the first game this season. . . . Steve Buckholz (1-0) is on the mound for the Bucs tonight while Arthur Rhodes (1-0) goes for the Keys.
