Sigmund Davidson, retired owner of Davidson's clothing stores, and the Roanoke Memorial Hospital's Hospice Volunteers received gold medals. Botetourt Senior Citizens Van Transportation Volunteers and Tony Weddle won silver medals, according to the Voluntary Action Center of the Council of Community Services.
Davidson was cited for volunteering and raising money for almost a dozen civic institutions, including Center in the Square and the American Red Cross. Hospice volunteers at Roanoke Memorial were honored for contributing more than 1,800 hours in 1989 to patients.
Weddle, a volunteer firefighter in Willis, has contributed 700 to 800 hours a year for the past 20 years. The Fincastle-based Van Transportation Program was cited for providing rides for senior citizens to doctor's appointments, grocery shopping and for other personal business. During each of the past 10 years, an average of 144 people have traveled over 248,000 miles courtesy of the service.
