A current magazine-subscription operation recruits young men and women from out-of-state who are housed in local hotels long enough to scour an area and make as many cash sells as possible, according to a division spokesman.
These young people are not licensed and frequently tell customers they are earning money or "points" toward a college scholarship or other worthwhile cause. With past operations, consumers have not received the subscriptions they paid for, the spokesman said.
To avoid being ripped off, consumers should never pay with cash, money order or a check made out to cash. Consumers have a three-day right-of-cancellation on purchases made in their home.
