U.S. COAL PRODUCTION IS HIGHEST ON RECORD

U.S. coal production during the first quarter of 1990 was 263 million tons, the highest quarterly production on record, the U.S. Energy Information Administration reported.

Production in March was 91.4 million tons compared with 89.3 million tons in March 1989. First-quarter production a year ago was 247 million tons.

Wyoming, the nation's leading coal-producing state, mined 45 million tons in the first quarter, 4 million more than last year. Kentucky produced 44 million tons in the quarter, 3 million above last year.

Virginia quarterly coal production was 14 million tons compared with 12.3 million tons in 1989. - Staff report
