The total number of jobs was up more than 27 percent from a year ago, according to the state Department of Economic Development.
Topping the list of 1,290 new jobs were 800 at Grove Worldwide in Salem. Next were 200 at Elizabeth Arden, 120 at Couvrette Building Systems, 100 at Precision Fabrics and 70 expected at Virginia Transformer's new plant.
Of the state's new jobs, 2,194, more than one-third, were in Western Virginia. These companies made announcements: Addressograph Imprinters' subsidiary, Datacard Corp., Rocky Mount, 300 jobs; Advanced Air Systems, 60, and PADTech Inc., 55, both in Henry County; Buchanan Bolt, Buchanan County, 75; PADTech Inc., Henry County, 55; CompAir-Kellogg (Robertshaw Controls), Independence, 100; Federal Mogul, Blacksburg, 24; Magnox, 40, and Renfro, 250, both in Pulaski County.
Planned investment in Virginia by manufacturers exceeded $219 million, more than one-third higher than a year ago, the report said. - Staff report
