DOWNTOWN BOARD BOOSTS MERGER PLAN

Directors of Downtown Roanoke Inc. have endorsed the proposed consolidation of Roanoke and Roanoke County and the city's $15.2-million bond issue facing voters on May 1.

Their resolution said consolidation will greatly enhance the future for continued growth and development of the entire valley, as well as eliminating "costly duplication of government services."

Passage of the bond issue "will serve the city of Roanoke well into the next century and further strengthen downtown's position as the cultural, financial and transportation center of Western Virginia," the board's resolution said. - Staff report
