BUCS' BAD DAY ENDS WITH LOSS

The Buccaneers got off on the wrong foot when the team bus broke down before leaving Salem, and Kinston finished the day off with a 7-3 Carolina League baseball victory Thursday night.

After the late start, Salem (5-3) took a 2-0 first-inning lead. Bruce Schreiber singled off winning pitcher Ty Kovach (2-0) and scored on a triple by Domingo Merejo. Tim Hines then singled to score Merejo.

Knuckleballer Tim Wakefield (1-1) didn't give up a hit for Salem but got into trouble with his control in the fifth. He walked Lindsay Foster to lead off the inning. Foster stole second, moved to third on a fly ball and scored on a ground out by Rouglas Odour. Wakefield walked the next three and left the game at his 95-pitch limit. Tim McDowell entered and was greeted by Marc Tepper's two-run single through the infield. Nolan Lane singled in two more runs to give the Indians (5-3) all they needed to win.

In tonight's game, left-hander John Jatham starts for Salem (1-0) against right-hander David Oliveras, who has an 11.25 ERA.
