2 AREAS DESIGNATED FOR MAJOR RACE TRACKS

The Virginia Racing Commission has agreed in principle to reserve Northern Virginia and the Richmond-Tidewater area for major pari-mutuel horse race tracks.

The commission Wednesday also said it will approve no tracks for at least a year in those primary areas. But the group stopped short of placing a year-long moratorium on approving any license applications for race tracks.

The delay would allow the General Assembly to consider whether the state should allow satellite betting, either at off-track parlors or at other race tracks. The practice is not allowed under current Virginia law.
