VCU EXPECTS TO CUT UP TO 175 POSITIONS

Officials at Virginia Commonwealth University are bracing for the loss of up to 175 full-time jobs as the school faces a $13 million cut in state funds over the next two years.

"This has not blind-sided anybody," said Thomas R. Poe, director of university relations. "But that's not made it any easier."

Since December, VCU officials have been studying possible ways to cover the loss of $6 million in state money from the university's budget for 1991 and a loss of $7 million in 1992. They said Thursday they would recommend the job cuts and other austerity measures such as reducing library hours.
