FOUR-RUN SEVENTH LIFTS INDIANS OVER BUCS 8-4

The Kinston Indians broke open a tie game with a four-run seventh inning and went on to defeat the Salem Buccaneers 8-4 on Friday night in Carolina League baseball.

Salem, which lost Thursday night's game to the Indians 7-3, took an early lead Friday. Tim Hines, Keith Raisanen and Ben Shelton walked to load the bases in the second inning. After Darwin Pennye struck out, Mike Huyler hit a ground ball to shortstop, which scored Hines, and an error by Kinston first baseman Marc Tepper allowed Raisanen to score, giving the Bucs a 2-0 lead.

Kinston tied the game in the fourth when Eddie Zambrano homered over the left-field fence, and Rouglas Odour singled home Brian Johnson later in the inning.

Salem (5-4) regained the lead in the fifth when Glen McNabb scored on Domingo Merejo's infield grounder.

Kinston put away the game in the seventh inning. The key hit was a bases-loaded two-run single by Johnson, who scored later in the inning on a fielder's choice and finished 3-for-5. The Indians (6-3) added two insurance runs in the eighth.

Kinston starting pitcher David Oliveras, who came into the game with an 11.25 earned-run average, pitched six innings, allowing three hits and three runs and striking out 10 Bucs. Mike Ellis picked up the win, and Will Vespe earned his second save of the season. The three pitchers combined to allow just four Salem hits.
