Jeffrey P. Sinensky of the league's civil rights division said "Christianity may be essential to Turner's personal theme of self-achievement," but "it is inappropriate for her to use a public school platform" to suggest that children need a similar religious commitment.
In response, the chief executive officer of the Miss America Pageant, Leonard Horn, said he has asked Turner not to use Christian songs at state-run schools.
