BACKS DEMOCRATIC TICKET FOR COUNCIL

MAY 1 is an important election day. There will be three seats on City Council to fill. Our councilmen make all decisions on the amount of taxes we pay annually and how the money is spent.

I strongly support the Democratic ticket of Howard Musser, Bill White and Jim Harvey. They all have had many years of experience, with good voting records.

During the time Musser and Howard served on City Council, the real-estate tax rate has been reduced by 25 percent. In 1989 Musser, with the help of Harvey and others, collected petitions with more than 800 names requesting that council reduce the tax rate an additional 5 cents in early 1989, but failed. Learning later the city budget had the largest surplus in its history, they requested a 2-cent reduction and failed again.

The other incumbent city councilman seeking re-election voted against both those tax rate decreases. He is now claiming almost full responsibility for most of the new building sites purchased to attract new business into the city. He was employed by the Norfolk Southern Railroad to do that job, and its efforts could have accomplished a great portion of his claims.

White has served on the city School Board for five years with a good record, and his experience can be very important, particularly at budget time.
