Festival Bike Race

The second annual WDBJ-7 Festival Bike Race will be held on the streets of downtown Roanoke Memorial Day, Monday, May 28. Six races for a total of 135 miles will be contested in the United States Cycling Federation-sanctioned events.

Six races also will be held for non-licensed "citizen" riders. These races will range in distance from 25 yards for the up-to-3 years-old group, to three miles for adults. Children under 6 will race in special tricycle races.

Point of Honor

Point of Honor, the Federal-style home built by Dr. George Cabell Sr., will be open during the annual Historic Garden Week Tour in Lynchburg on Tuesday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A set of Baltimore Federal dining chairs, crafted of mahogany with birds-eye maple inlay, will be featured as the latest additions to the home's interior.

Point of Honor was restored by the Lynchburg Historical Foundation and the Katherine Garland Diggs Trust in 1976 and 1977. The Garden Club of Virginia restored the grounds, walks and gardens of the landmark.

Earth Day

Earth Day on Mill Mountain, sponsored by Dominion Bank, Cycle Systems and Valley Beautiful Council, takes place today from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Visitors are encouraged to wear earth's colors, blue and green, and bring any recyclable items. There will be refreshments, displays and live music.

From 1:30-3:30, Congressman Jim Olin, Roanoke City Councilman David Bowers and Roanoke County Supervisor Lee Eddy will speak at a rally in the zoo plaza.

Bus transportation will be provided every half-hour from the Victory Stadium parking lot to Mill Mountain.

An "Environmental Walk," sponsored by the Roanoke Parks and Recreation Department, starts at 12:30 from Walnut Avenue.

Walkers are asked to bring blankets and pack their lunches. Registration deadline is today at noon at the Parks and Recreation Building on Reserve Avenue.
