COAL DEMAND STILL GROWING OVERSEAS

The number of coal ships calling at the port of Hampton Roads is increasing this year as the overseas demand for coal continues to climb, officials said.

"It's the oldest coal in the world; it's the good stuff. I'm confident we're going to move more of it," said Wilson J. Browning Jr., a port agent for many of the colliers.

Because Appalachian coal tends to burn cleaner than other types, more factories are switching to it to meet growing environmental concerns over pollution. The price of other coals also is rising as foreign governments decrease or halt coal-mining subsidies. - Associated Press
