SHAREHOLDERS SEEKING EXXON ACCOUNTABILITY

Thirteen months and 3,200 miles away, the Valdez spill again will wash over America's largest oil company Wednesday as shareholders consider six proposals seeking to make Exxon Corp. more ecologically responsive.

Management opposes as duplicative and unnecessary all six proposals, which would require Exxon to report annually on its environmental performance, eliminate or reduce carbon dioxide and toxic chemical emissions, and "show real leadership" in dealing with the damage to Prince William Sound.

"Generally, I would like them to be responsible for their actions and to know there are shareholders who care more about integrity and responsibility than total profit," said shareholder Anne Chapman of Denver.

This year's annual meeting is expected to be less dramatic than last year's, when 2,000 shareholders and 250 demonstrators - some waving oil-soaked rags - descended on a New Jersey hotel less than a month after the Exxon Valdez spilled 11 million gallons of crude off Alaska's shoreline.
