CLINCHCO FIRST NEW VA. TOWN IN 23 YEARS

Dickenson County has a new town of about 750 residents following the signing by Gov. Douglas Wilder of a bill creating the incorporated town of Clinchco.

The bill creating the new town - Virginia's first in 23 years - had been passed unanimously by both houses of the General Assembly this year. Wilder signed it last week.

Now Clinchco, located north of the Dickenson County seat of Clintwood and west of Haysi, must elect a mayor and Town Council members. That election has been scheduled for Aug. 7, with the town officials assuming office by Sept. 1
