TALKS DELAY NLRB'S FIRST UMW HEARING

The first of a series of hearings involving National Labor Relations Board charges of illegal strike activities against the United Mine Workers has been postponed until Wednesday in U.S. Western District Court.

The hearing, originally scheduled Monday, was delayed to give the board and union more time to try to reach an out-of-court settlement on charges arising from the 10 1/2-month strike by the UMW against Pittston Coal.

Gary Lindsay, a board spokesman in Cincinnati, said Monday that the hearings - before an administrative law judge - would move from location to location.

After Abingdon, hearings are to be held in in West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Missouri, Indiana and Alabama.

The Abingdon hearing now is scheduled at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

The charges involve wildcat strikes that occurred in several states during June and July in support of the UMW strike against Pittston.

The strike ran from April 5, 1989, until Feb. 19 when strikers voted to accepted a new contract.
