REFUGEES INCREASING, REPORT NOTES

There were more than 15 million refugees last year despite the easing of international tension, the U.S. Committee for Refugees said Tuesday.

"The number of refugees worldwide has increased by 50 percent in the last five years - from 10 million in 1985 to 15 million in 1989," Robert P. Winter, director of the private group, said in a statement.

"That does not take into account at least that many more persons who have fled their homes for the same reasons as refugees, but who remain within the boundaries of their countries."

The committee had estimated the total number of refugees at 14.4 million the previous year. - Associated Press
