Elaine J. Higgs, director of the Voluntary Action Center of Montgomery County, Inc., recently attended a state conference on volunteerism at the Roanoke Marriott. The 1990 Conference on Volunteerism included workshops in fund-raising, communication skills, planning and legal liability for volunteer programs.
Robert G. Burnley and Michael M. Hawes have joined the staff of Olver Inc. Consulting Engineers and Environmental Labotatories. Burnley, who worked with the state Water Control Board for 17 years including four years as director of the Roanoke regional office, is Olver's associate director of environmental programs. Hawes, former vice president for finance at Smithey and Boynton in Roanoke, was hired as vice president for finance and administration.
Robert Trout, medical technologist at Radford Community Hospital, will receive the Distinguished Achievement Award from Americal Medical Technologists in July. Trout, of Christiansburg, has worked for the hospital since 1981. The award recognizes his service to his profession and to the national organization.
Harvey Sowers Jr. of Christiansburg received a Counsellor's Club Award and Robbie Gardner of Pulaski received a Quality Business Award from World Insurance Co. The awards recognize outstanding health and life insurance sales.
