COURT AWARDS AMERICA'S CUP TO SAN DIEGO

The America's Cup, tarnished by a three-year legal battle that bounced the sailing trophy between New Zealand and the United States, finally surfaced.

New York's highest court, in a 5-2 decision, ended the tussle Thursday by awarding the Cup to the San Diego Yacht Club.

New York's Court of Appeals ruled San Diego was within Cup rules when it used a high-tech catamaran skippered by Dennis Conner to defeat the 133-foot single-hulled sloop from New Zealand in court-ordered races off San Diego in September 1988.
