The filing in New York late Wednesday followed a tumultuous week in which Ames stock traded wildly on the New York Stock Exchange amid speculation that the chain would seek protection from creditors under Chapter 11 of the federal Bankruptcy Code.
Some suppliers, including Gerber Products Co. children's clothing and The Gitano Group Inc., have refused to ship items needed to fill Ames' shelves for spring because they claim they haven't been paid for earlier deliveries.
Ames has said it will close its store at Towne Square shopping center in Roanoke and others in Staunton, Harrisonburg and 71 other cities. - Associated Press
