The government on Thursday approved the sale of most Eastern Airlines foreign routes to American Airlines and awarded a new Texas-Tokyo route to Continental Airlines.

\ Thai Airways International has placed a $300 million order for General Electric engines for five Boeing 747-400s and four Airbus Industrie A330s, to be made by the aircraft engines division in the Cincinnati suburb of Evendale, GE said.

\ Begley Drug Inc., a new company, will buy 37 Eckerd drugstores in East Tennessee and Western Virginia and set up headquarters in Knoxville, Tenn. Closing on the sale was to begin Thursday and conclude on May 4. Both companies refused to discuss terms of the sale.

\ Unocal Corp., a Los Angeles-based oil and gas company, says it will buy 7,000 pre-1971 cars from area drivers and scrap them as one of several environmental initiatives to reduce smog.
