The seizing of the doctor, Humberto Alvarez Machain, this month and his later appearance in a California jail have become a major source of tension in relations between Mexico and the United States.
Alvarez has been indicted by a Los Angeles grand jury on charges of providing medical supervision and taking part in the 1985 torture and murder in Guadalajara of the agent, Enrique Camarena Salazar.
Mexican officials who asked not to be identified said that four policemen in the state of Guanajuato were taken into custody this week and are being questioned about Alvarez's abduction in Guadalajara on April 3.
The policemen were said to have agreed to act as "bounty hunters" for the Drug Enforcement Administration, but Mexican officials said they also wanted to question the police officers about witnesses' statements that "a gringo" directed and took part in the kidnapping. - The New York Times
