"LET'S PIG OUT!"
This is the weekend to do it - literally.
Pig Fest '90 happens Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Montgomery County Park. You can fill your plates with spicy pork barbecue, hot dogs and baked beans, tangy coleslaw and sweet desserts while enjoying music and entertainment by some talented local performers.
The Appalkids from Pulaski County High School will kick off the event with Appalachian songs and stories, and the snazzy, jazzy 18-piece Christiansburg High School Jazz Band will follow. Chris Saunders, a local favorite, will strum and hum throughout the afternoon.
Closing the day's entertainment will be the dulcet duo Eli and Donavan, performing contemporary jazz and bluegrass music.
For the kids, there will be games and face-painting provided by the Blacksburg and Christiansburg Junior Women's Clubs.
It's a day of food and fun for the whole family and it's sponsored by the Teen Parent Support Program of New River Community Action.
Promoting happy, healthy families is what the Teen Parent Support Program is all about. The program aims to assist teen-age parents in furthering their educations, learning effective parenting skills and dealing with the frustrations of youth and poverty.
Proceeds from Pig Fest '90 will help the cause.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $2.50 for children ages 2 to 10. Mary Myers, coordinator of the program, has ticket information. Call her at 381-1561 or contact any Teen Parent Support Program volunteer.
\ PIG OUT II: If you live within a hundred-mile radius of Snowville, you should fill your gas tank and cruise over to the Snowville Volunteer Fire Department's annual Fireman's Supper this Saturday at the Snowville Elementary School. The cooks are promising a spread that will be worth the trip.
Southern fried chicken with homemade gravy, freshly baked ham, coleslaw, green beans, creamy potatoes, hot rolls, drinks and a table full of sinful desserts will be waiting for you. Serving times are between 3:30 and 7:30 p.m. and the cost is just $6 for adults, $3 for the kids.
Last year the volunteer firefighters fed more than 1,000 hungry folks and they're hoping for an even bigger turnout this year. The supper is the only fund-raiser of the year for the department.
The Snowville school is located on Virginia 693 in Pulaski County.
\ PIG OUT III: The Montgomery County Democrats will be doing it potluck style at 6:30 p.m. in Christiansburg Middle School. They're inviting you to bring your favorite dish and a $5 donation and enjoy good food and lively conversation - of the political persuasion.
State Sen. Madison Marye and Reps. Joan Munford and Rick Boucher will be there to lead the conversation and - no doubt - the lines heading for the goodies.
For information about the potluck supper, call Eva Tawes at 552-2439 or Steve Cochran at 382-5695.
\ NAME YOUR TUNE: More than likely, the Blacksburg Community Band can play it.
The band will be performing a musical selection as varied as the musicians themselves tonight at 8 in the Blacksburg High School auditorium.
Do you like Sousa marches? Broadway show tunes? Old Frank Sinatra hits?
You'll hear them at tonight's concert.
The Blacksburg Community Band is composed of 35 to 40 people from all walks of life - businessmen and women, educators, homemakers, you name it. Band member Ron Gibbs said the musicians play for one good reason: "It's just something we love to do!"
Practices are held each Wednesday from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in the band room at Blacksburg High School. Gibbs said new members are welcome and donations of used instruments are always appreciated.
For information, call Gibbs at 953-2537.
Admission to the concert is a $1 donation. The musical fare is delightful and the band is a treat to see.
