GE Aerospace, based in Valley Forge, Pa., said it would cut 4,200 jobs in the next 2 1/2 years in Binghampton, Syracuse and Utica, N.Y., and Camden and Moorestown, N.J.
About 2,000 of the cuts will come from retirements and attrition.
GE Aerospace said reducing its work force would make the company more competitive in an era of tightened military budgets.
In Burbank, Calif., Lockheed Aeronautical Systems Co. said it would lay off about 2,750 workers in California and Georgia by the end of June.
The announcements came one day after Defense Secretary Dick Cheney proposed large reductions in the development and production of new warplanes.
Also Thursday, McDonnell Douglas Corp. said it would eliminate 3,000 jobs at its Douglas Aircraft plant in Long Beach, Calif.
