Its board of directors voted unanimously earlier this month to recommend against any change.
Of the graduates responding to an alumni survey, 39.57 percent favored a name change; 58.87 percent were against it; and 1.56 percent did not care. Those favoring a change suggested more than 50 different names.
A General Assembly resolution to change the name to the University of Virginia at Wise died in the Senate Rules Committee March 5 as urged by outgoing University of Virginia President Robert O'Neil.
He said the changes in the presidency and nearly half the university's board members made this a bad time to study the feasibility of changing the name of the university's branch college.
