ABC MAKING MORE SCHEDULE CHANGES

ABC's new low-rated "Capital News" and "Sunset Beat" are being taken off the air for a hiatus, but there will at least one more "Elvis" sighting next month.

ABC's shuffle of the shows came a day before the start of the key April 26-May 23 ratings "sweeps" that help determine advertising rates for local television stations.

"Sunset Beat," about undercover cops in Los Angeles, got the hook after only one broadcast, its premiere last Saturday. It will get one more showing, with its future to be announced later.

It will be replaced on May 5 by two half-hour episodes of the low-rated "Elvis" series based on the early career of Elvis Presley. That new show was yanked by ABC last month when it failed to hold its strong Sunday lead-in from the hit "America's Funniest Home Videos."

"Capital News," a Washington newspaper series that premiered April 9, will leave ABC's schedule after its broadcast Monday, although a network spokesman said that the show will return at a later date. Four episodes will have been shown when it leaves the schedule; nine more have been filmed.

"China Beach" is also being pulled from the schedule again after Monday's episode. The series spent the year in the 10 p.m. Wednesday timeslot and, after a rest, was installed on Monday night earlier this month as a lead-in to "Capital News."

With the collapse of "Capital News" at 10, ABC is returning to a two-hour movie at 9 p.m., starting May 7, with Bette Midler and Danny DeVito in "Ruthless People." - From wire reports
