ALEXANDER LOSES RIDE; FULLER WINS MODIFIED

Team owner Bobby Allison announced Saturday that Jeff Purvis has been selected to replace Mike Alexander as driver for the first-year Winston Cup operation.

Alexander, who has struggled in his comeback from a head injury suffered in a crash in 1988 at Pensacola, Fla., said he resigned by mutual agreement.

Alexander, 32, said he made the decision after crashing during Friday's practice for today's Hanes 500 NASCAR Winston Cup race at Martinsville Speedway.

"This way we can show what this team is all about," Alexander said. "I thought it was best for everybody involved to let somebody else take a try at it. The potential is there with this team. I think Jeff might be able to help bring it out."

Purvis, 31, of Clarksville, Tenn., will compete in his first Winston Cup race today. He is a two-time National Dirt Racing Association champion.

"Bobby Allison called and asked if I could help his team out for a while," Purvis said. "I thought at first it was a crank call."

Allison, who still is recovering from injuries he received in a hard crash in 1988 at Pocono, Pa., said Purvis will drive the car on a "race-to-race" basis.

"I ran into Jeff in a restaurant several years ago," Allison said. "I ran on the dirt with him before I got hurt. It's a deal where I kept thinking about Jeff's name, and here he is."

Jeff Fuller led from flag-to-flag to win Saturday's Raven Boats 150 NASCAR Modified race.

"The car was a dream to drive," said the Auburn, Mass., driver, who started on the pole en route to his second career Martinsville win.

Defending Modified national champion Mike Stefanik finished second, 10 car-lengths back. George Kent, Reggie Ruggiero and Jamie Tomaino rounded out the top five.

Don "Satch" Worley of Rocky Mount finished 16th in the 150-lap race, which was witnessed by estimated 12,000 fans.
