KEYDETS CAPTURE SC TRACK CROWN

Greg Hatchett and Mario Small each won two events Saturday to lead VMI to its second Southern Conference outdoor track and field championship in three years.

The Keydets scored 144 points to finish 20 points ahead of host Appalachian State. Western Carolina was third at 99, followed by East Tennessee State (92), The Citadel (80), Marshall (54), Furman (20) and Tennessee-Chattanooga (3).

Hatchett won the long jump in 24 feet, 1/2 inch and the 100-meter dash in 10.1 seconds. The 100-meters time was a Southern Conference record and an NCAA meet qualifier, provisional standard. That means his name will be put on a list for possible selection.

Small led a VMI sweep of the top three places in the 200 meters. He ran a time of 21.42 seconds to finish ahead of Hatchett and Esteban Frost. Small also won the 400 in 46.77 seconds, ahead of Frost.

VMI took the top four places in the pole vault, led by Keith Peloquin in 13 feet, 6 inches. Mike Naifeh won the shot put in 50 feet, 2 inches and Kenny Kovac won the hammer throw in 174-2.

Coley Rice finished second in the 800-meter run.

James Hines of East Tennessee State was selected outdoor athlete of the year in the conference after winning the 10,000- and 5,000-meter runs and finishing second in the 3,000. Danny Williamson of Western Carolina was selected coach of the year.
