Richard Wayne Smith, 21, was found shot to death about 8 a.m. in the yard of his mother's home in Walters Trailer Park on U.S. 11 between Pulaski and Dublin. His body was found by neighbors.
The Pulaski County Sheriff's Department said the shooting occurred about 4:30 a.m. after an argument with a man about the man's wife. Smith was shot three times with a handgun, police said.
Harold Lee Lawson Jr., 32, of Max Meadows, turned himself in to deputies in Wythe County on Saturday and was charged with murder and illegal use of a firearm in a felony.
He was turned over to Pulaski authorities and is in the Pulaski County Jail on $100,000 bond.
The owner of the trailer park, who asked not to be identified by name, said residents told her they heard four shots between 4 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. But nobody responded to the shots or investigated the shooting until Smith's body was found, she said.
Smith's mother, Mary Ramey, said Lawson and his wife have been separated a short time, but she would not comment further. Pulaski investigators said, however, that Lawson, an auto mechanic at Heritage Pontiac in Pulaski, told them he and his wife are not separated.
