UVA BATS BOMBARD MARYLAND

Virginia set an Atlantic Coast Conference baseball record with 34 hits and Mark McMillan contributed six of them to tie an individual mark in a 29-10 whipping of Maryland on Saturday.

The 34 hits broke the previous mark of 30 set by Georgia Tech against Maryland on March 28, 1985. McMillan's hits, which included an eighth-inning solo home run for his first this season, tied a mark shared by eight others.

In its last two games against the Terrapins, Virginia (7-11 in the ACC, 19-28-1 overall) has scored 50 runs against Maryland pitching, which has given up 54 hits in the two games and faces Virginia again today.

Each Virginia player had at least two hits. In addition to his homer, McMillan had two doubles and three singles. Bobby Rivell hit two home runs, the second of which was a fifth-inning grand slam that gave Virginia a 14-1 lead.

Maryland (2-15, 17-23-1) reached double figures with five runs in the ninth inning, three of them on shortstop Billy Meury's home run.
