FIELDALE-COLLINSVILLE STAR PICKS ROANOKE

Because Division III coaches aren't bound by the NCAA's recruiting dead period, Roanoke coach Page Moir took full advantage of having so many stars in Cassell Coliseum for the Amateur Athletic Union state basketball tournaments.

His efforts were rewarded when Timesland scoring leader and All-Timesland selection Kevin Martin from Fieldale-Collinsville announced he would attend Roanoke.

"It's going to be Roanoke," said Martin, who averaged 28.8 points and 10.6 rebounds as a senior. "That's what my family and I want to go with. The coach really impressed me and the campus is beautiful. I'm looking forward to it. Roanoke has a great tradition, and I hope I can contribute to it."

Martin's mother said she would deliver the entrance deposit to Roanoke on Monday to make the commitment official.

It's still early, but Timesland sophomore of the year Odell Hodge from Laurel Park said Virginia Tech is his top choice for college.

"They were the first to contact me," said Hodge, who already is 6 feet 8. "They write me just about every day, and I really appreciate that. It's just an hour from home, which I also like."

Hodge averaged 23.6 points and 14.9 rebounds per game as a sophomore.

Hodge also listed Virginia, VMI, William and Mary, Wake Forest and Tennessee among his preferences, but "[Tech] is definitely in the front," he said.
