A conductor spotted the ninth car of a westbound CSX train leaking sodium hydrosulfide solution, a corrosive chemical, about 5 a.m. as the train passed through a Gladstone train yard, said Pete McFadden, a CSX yardsman.
Several residents living near the railroad tracks were asked to leave their homes briefly while a crew cleaned up the spill, McFadden said.
No injuries were reported.
The train was on its way to a paper mill in Covington, where the corrosive chemicals were to be delivered.
McFadden said a code number that labeled the chemical indicated the substance was harmful if inhaled or ingested.
