Star '76 defeated the Harpeth Hurricanes of Knoxville, Tenn., 5-3; beat the Farragut Flames of Nashville, Tenn., 1-0; and beat the Tucker (Ga.) Wildcats 4-3 in double overtime for the title.
Roanoke's Martin Smanski scored two goals in the title match and had five in the tournament.
The Star girls' team beat Tennessee teams from Oak Ridge, Chattanooga and Kingsport en route to its title. Carrie Moore, Amy Moore and Temple Forsythe combined for 12 goals in the three victories.
In the same tournament, Roanoke Star '79 White finished 2-1 after losing the championship to Mauldin, S.C., 4-1, and the Roanoke girls' under-14 team won two games before losing the title game. - Staff report
