Bauer, a Coral Gables, Fla., research firm, based the awards on its analysis of 1989 financial data filed by 2,898 thrifts. Ratings range from zero for insolvent thrifts up to five stars for the strongest, most credit-worthy thrifts.
Five stars indicate tangible capital exceeding 6 percent of tangible assets, which is twice the required federal ratio. Bauer gave the top ranking to 1,118 institutions. It said the top thrifts have no excessive delinquencies, repossessed assets or heavy investments in junk bonds.
Among those listed are Cooperative of Lynchburg, Community Federal of Staunton, First Federal of Martinsville, Imperial of Martinsville and Mutual of Danville. - Staff report
