INCOME, SAVINGS RISE; SPENDING RATE RELUCTANT

Americans' saving rate rose to 5.8 percent of their disposable income in March as consumer spending failed to match the increase in personal incomes, the government reported Monday. Analysts cited rising prices for the subdued spending.

Spending hit a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $3.66 trillion, slowing to a 0.4 percent gain after a 0.6 percent rise in February, the Commerce Department said. It was the lowest since October.

Personal incomes after taxes rose 0.8 percent in March, the largest increase since December. - Associated Press
