C. Donald Bedwell's announcement brings to three the number of candidates who have entered the Nov. 6 race for the clerk's position, vacated in December by James F. Tobey.
Circuit judges last year appointed June L. Higgs, a Salem civic leader and branch bank manager, to fill Tobey's unexpired term. Higgs was chosen from a field of 14 candidates to fill the position for a year until the November election.
Higgs has not declared herself a candidate in the November election but expects to within two weeks, she said Wednesday.
Bedwell, 46, who is running as an independent, was endorsed by the Salem Republican Party.
Bedwell is business manager at Valley Motorsport and a former vice president for Salem Bank & Trust. He was an assistant vice president and branch manager of Dominion Bank's Salem office for 10 years.
A 25-year resident of the Roanoke Valley, Bedwell lives in Salem with his wife, Jenny.
