SOVIETS BUYING MORE U.S. BROILERS

The Soviet Union has emerged as a stunning new market for broilers and may edge out Japan this year as the traditional No. 1 foreign market for U.S. poultry, according to Agriculture Department analysts.

More than 110 million pounds of broiler leg quarters were sold to the Soviet Union recently by U.S. companies, a sale worth an estimated $50 million.

Japan topped the list of U.S. broiler markets overseas at 233 million pounds in calendar 1989.

Other big foreign markets include Mexico, Canada, Singapore, Jamaica, Spain and French Polynesia.
