The NCAA Men's Volleyball Championship trophy will remain in California for another year, as Long Beach State and Southern California won their national semifinal matches at George Mason University's Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va. Top-seeded Long Beach (28-6) beat Rutgers-Newark, 15-4, 15-8, 15-5, and Southern Cal, the second seed, ousted Ball State 15-4, 15-11, 15-10.

Long Beach, looking for its first national title, will play the three-time champion Trojans in the finals tonight.

In the 21 years of national championship competition, no team from outside of California has won the title and only twice has a non-California school made the finals.

Norfolk State assistant Isaac T. Morehead is the school's new head basketball coach, effective immediately. It had been reported that Radford coach Oliver Purnell was a candidate for the position.

Marshall University suspended two basketball players and a former member of the team from school for unspecified violations of school regulations, a spokesman said. The university suspended starting forward Maurice Sanders and reserve forward Anthony Beagle, both seniors next season, and Jeff Sonhouse, a forward who completed his eligibility last season.

Four Appalachian State football players, including All-Southern Conference free safety Gary Dandridge, have been dismissed from the team for the 1990 season, coach Jerry Moore announced. Moore said the players broke team rules, but that no drugs were involved.

Inside linebacker Riki Ellison, who was made an unrestricted free agent by the two-time defending Super Bowl champion San Francisco 49ers last month, was signed by the Los Angeles Raiders. No terms were announced.
