Matney, from Salem, entered his fish at 4:10 a.m. Sunday after casting a plug to the Gills Creek section of Smith Mountain Lake most of the night.
The bass unseated a 5.30-pound largemouth that had been leading the tournament since Friday.
Sunday's winners included a couple of repeat champions. Buster McRoy of Vinton, who won the crappie category with a 2.05-pound catch, also was the top crappie angler in 1987.
Ray Ratliff of Grundy was first in the smallmouth division this year and in 1981. His bass, landed late Saturday on a spinnerbait in the Beacon Marina area, weighed 3.45 pounds.
