TRIAL DATE SET IN W&L DEATH

Charles B. "Blake" Comer will be tried July 25 on involuntary manslaughter and hit and run charges stemming from the death of a fellow college student last spring, a judge said Monday.

Comer, of Greenville, S.C., is charged in connection with the death of Washington and Lee University freshman Mary Ashley Scarborough. Scarborough was hit by a car on Washington Street around 2 a.m. on March 16, 1989, as she walked to meet friends at a fraternity party.

Lexington police arrested Comer in November following a lengthy investigation, in which they checked out hundreds of cars and leads.

A former W&L history major, Comer no longer attends the university.

His court date was set in Rockbridge County Circuit Court Monday by Circuit Judge Rudolph Bumgardner.
