U.S. LISTS COMPANIES WITH PENSION GAPS

The federal government Monday identified the 50 U.S. companies with the largest gaps between the amount of money they will need to meet their pension obligations and the amount of cash they have set aside for them - a largely blue-chip list that includes General Motors Corp., CSX Corp., Reynolds Metals Co. and Bethlehem Steel Corp.

The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. said the underfunding of pension plans by the 50 companies represents a potential risk to the federal government of $14 billion. Release of the list comes at a time Congress and private consultants have warned that the nation's $1.7 trillion private pension system could become a crisis similar to the savings and loan situation.
