ARTISTIC DIRECTOR QUITS KENNEDY CENTER POST

Marta Istomin cited "a considerable philosophical difference" with the new chairman of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in announcing her resignation as artistic director.

In a letter Tuesday to James D. Wolfensohn, a New York investment banker who took command of the Kennedy Center on March 23, Istomin, the widow of cellist Pablo Casals, expressed resentment at the chairman's recent criticism of the center's programming under her stewardship for the last 10 years.
