TWO TEENS RIDING BIKE STRUCK BY CAR

Two teen-agers riding a bicycle were struck by a car late Wednesday in Northeast Roanoke, witnesses and authorities said.

The accident occurred about 11:41 p.m. near the rain-slickened intersection of Norton Avenue and Read Road, police dispatchers said.

The two youths, both males, were transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where they were being treated in the emergency room early today, a nursing supervisor said.

The driver of the car that struck them was charged with driving under the influence, authorities said.

The identities of the youths and the driver were not available early today.

Witnesses at the scene said the two youths are ages 15 and 18.

At the scene, a White Chevrolet Cavalier with part of its front end sheared away by the impact was blocking one lane of Read Road.

The crumpled wreckage of a bicycle was pinned underneath the car.

A rescue worker at the scene said one of the youths was lying near the car when authorities arrived. The other youth was lying in the nearby parking lot of the Run-In market about 40 yards from the car.

Police were requiring a woman to take a sobriety test while standing on the front porch of the market.

The woman was sobbing as police questioned her.

She was taken into custody after a police officer administered a breath test.

Authorities said the youths had ridden the bicycle onto Read Road after riding down Norton Avenue.
