Syphax, a 1948 graduate of the private university, and a member of its board of directors, donated the funds Sunday.
She said $300,000 is earmarked for the renovation of Coburn Hall, a school chapel that burned several years ago. The other $700,000 is unrestricted.
"I love Virginia Union," said Syphax, 63. "The hallowed grounds and dear old walls have always been very dear to me."
Virginia Union, which has 1,300 students, is undergoing a $30 million development campaign.
Syphax was chairman of the Arlington County School Board in 1982 and 1983. She left the board in 1984 when her four-year term expired.
