Crewe, a Wytheville lawyer, won an election over Dr. Carl E. Stark, a physician who has been the town's mayor for 28 years.
"I think it'll be a smooth transition. Carl and I were friends before the election," Crewe said. "He's pledged to do everything he can to assist . . . I know Carl loves the town of Wytheville too much to stop now, even though he lost the election."
Crewe said he would extend the hours that he would be available to meet with citizens in the mayor's office and would work to encourage more citizen participation on town committees.
Council now meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 7:30 p.m. "We may change that," Crewe said. "That's something else we'd like to hear from the citizens on."
He said he had two priorities as mayor.
"The first thing that I think we need to direct our attention to, and what I campaigned on, was attracting better industry," he said. "Almost equal with that . . . is some kind of a form of recreation for our young people so we can do something about our cruising problem and so our young people will have something to do at night other than ride up and down Main Street."
